John and Cut-Throat,
Thanks for your inputs.
I have an Oppo 93 and it sounds "pretty" good. My MAC-based system is marginally better but doesn't come near my vinyl despite being touted as "perfect sound forever."
I am trying to take a system view of the entire chain of all the hardware, SW, interfaces and environment (physical and electrical) that I have control over. I can't do anything about what is locked onto the CD I start with, but I am told there is a lot I can do all along the chain to preserve, enhance or even degrade the signal that arrives at my amplifiers. Right now, I don't have a good idea of what those things might be.
"Google" is indeed my friend, Cut-Throat, and the reference you gave me is helpful but I need a long chalkboard to really start piecing things together. I'm meeting with a techie buddy this afternoon and I intend to blister his brain. We'll see how it goes.
