They were FREE even before Comcast put out the 'Xfinity' SSIDs accessible by any customer. [This feature can be disabled. I disabled mine]. It's a great idea though. Whenever I walk into a business that has Comcast service and the 'Xfinity' SSID, my phone connects to it automatically instead of having to learn a new SSID & password.

I'm not sure which one we had previous but here's a list of Comcast wireless gateways. Ours looked like #1 #2 or #3, we now have the XB6 shown in the list linked below:
