RE: Question about Thunderbolt compatibility?

Does the docking station device that the merchant sold you have a thunderbolt logo on it? USB-C does not necessarily carry thunderbolt signals, but it can.

You would be better off with a Thunderbolt 2 docking station, that has a Thunderbolt 2 style connector (mini display port) for the laptop end.

Otherwise, you can probably use a Thunderbolt 2 to Thunderbolt 3 adapter, but of course this assumes that your docking station supports Thunderbolt 3 in the first place, and not just USB-C on the laptop end. The adapters are bi-directional and available from Apple and other sources.
