I arrived at the same conclusion that the outboard DAC and downstream components make a much bigger difference in overall sonic quality vs. the computer itself.... assuming the computer is not some old crippled POS that should have been retired long ago.
You can tweak and nearly cripple the computer 'til you're blue in face and get some return on your effort but nothing near what a better DAC will do.
In the grand scheme of the audio 'system', the computer's contribution is relatively minimal.
