The comment about DSD hasn't been my experience. It may have something to do with the particular recordings that were used. I have compared Channel Classics native DSD with 88/24 conversions of these that I had previously purchased and there is no question that the DSD version is better. I don't have any comparable comparisons to make at 176/24.
The best performance of the Mytek comes at DSD128. This is the consensus of a number of mastering engineers who have tried this device. I have found that the best sound when playing PCM files is to convert these to DSD128, as this sounds better than playing them at their native PCM sampling rates, or upsampling the lower PCM sampling rates. The PCM filtering in the SABRE chip set for 44 kHz recordings is not optimum, with either of the two available filter settings.
Incidentally, the review was incorrect or outdated when it said that DSD didn't work over USB2.0. This is what I use and it works fine, using ASIO players capable of handling DSD. (I prefer HQPlayer which has a good suite of filters to experiment with.)
I was warned that it would take 500 hours for the Mytek to break in. At the time I thought this most unlikely (polite form of the thought) but indeed it took about that long. I have no clue why this might be. I left the unit on 24/7, playing music for six hours a day on average and it was several months before things settled down to the present level of excellence.
