Plextor isn't what it used to be; there's a lot of other good drives out there, mostly for much less money.

BenQ for example; some were sold as Sony and Plextor models. (BenQ1640 = Plextor 740A) (BenQ DW1650 & Sony DRU-810A) One nice feature was that the drives with a Philips chipset reported low-level error information, so you could tell the real quality of a burned DVD using Nero CD-DVD Speed.

Those "no-name" boxed drives at the computer stores often have decent to very-good name-brand drives lurking inside. If there's a good sale on, get the salescritter to open a box, see what the drive really is, then check out reviews someplace like CDfreaks.com
