Why no "reasonably" priced USB Dacs?

So, I'm preparing to finish of my PC based system and I'm wavering on what USBDac to go with. I know the Scott Nixon is around $500, but is hard to get ahold of from what I hear. The next step up is the Wavelength Brick at $1700. Is there nothing in between or the techonoly is just so new? Just wondering if you guys had any thoughts before I started looking seriously. I would like to spend maybe $500-1000.
