Interference

Before moving to my current condo I lived in a house and in a different condo. I would stream iTunes to two Airport Express units in different rooms, and (in the case of the condo) in different floors. Distances from the computer ranged from 20 to 40 feet. No dropouts.

I have dropouts in my current condo, and I have traced them to interference, using tools like iStumbler. Virtually everybody around me has wireless networks, microwave ovens, and wireless phones. Dropouts occur even with the AE that is in the same room as the computer.

Interference is not noticeable with wireless Internet or file transfers because there is simply a slowdown or brief stop, but the computer screen does not go blank.

I am hoping that the new 802.11n wireless standard will have more robust interference protection...
