Apple Lossless may be "lossless", but it is still compressed. It is just not "lossy" compression. The file size should be around 55%-65% of an AIFF.

You're not doing anything wrong. Just remember though, choosing AAC encoding also results in a .m4a file, but that is "lossy" compression, so don't get the two confused.
