The M-Audio USB Audiophile can be considered a USB to S/PDIF converter and/or a USB DAC. (The DAC is the AK4528) It also has headphone output with volume control and a gain control for the analog output. BTW, are you saying with the gain control all the way up it still does not have the gain of the iMic?Anyway, IMHO, considering your speakers and the fact that most of your listening is to MP3, I would say getting an external DAC (to be used with the Audiophile S/PDIF output) would be a waste of money and/or buying a more expensive USB DAC would indeed be overkill. I'm not saying you wouldn't necessarily hear a difference, but I still think it would be overkill (and cost prohibitive).
