System Architecture

A Google search didn't help me, so I thought I'd ask here. I'm not an electrical engineer or an expert on the technical specifications of audio equipment, so be gentle.

My impression is that a CD or DVD player sends a stream of bits to the DAC, which then sends electric voltage to the pre-amp. My impression is that this all happens in real time, i.e., without any meaningful buffering other than, what a two or three second anti-skip buffer on mobile players?

How does a hard drive compare to this? Does it send bits straight to the DAC? Is there a buffer? I'm going to have more questions, but I thought I'd try to ask in detail about each step of the way and see how it goes. Thanks.
