If you play at loud levels, I'd think of skipping the preamp.
You'll save lots of messy electronics in the chain.

I still own a TVC (S&B TX102), which is said to sound like a
piece of wire. These people havn't really listened to a 2 inch piece a silver wire!! ;)

Keep also in mind per 6db attentuation you'll loose 1 bit resolution.
You'll limit the danymic range by doing it the digital way.

I could even skip the coupling caps of my DAC.
Transient response will be great!

Make sure that you find a player supporting 32 bit float DSP for volume control, such as J.River. That's better than standard
PC Volume control.
