Based on my experience, the differences between the flagship DACs under identical conditions are very small. I suspect a lot of the differences that we hear are due to other factors (such as differences in jitter, or variances in the output filtering).
But I definitely don't want to turn this into yet another "does jitter really matter and why can't we get rid of it by buffering" thread :-) I think we had a few of those last year!
