Despite numerous very expensive upgrades to my computer audio system over the years, I still stand by a statement I made a couple of years ago: the upgrade from my original Soundblaster Audigy (ZX I think?) to an E-Mu 1212M was the biggest upgrade I've ever made.I think that mainly speaks poorly of the Soundblaster series of cards, whose audio output (of music) is just plain awful (thanks to resampling, I believe).
I've also stated in the past that the difference between high-end DACs is very slight, and is generally greatly exaggerated in the online reviews and comparisons I've read (here, at Head-Fi, and elsewhere).
