I have almost opposite impression. Using balanced output to feed my Ayre amp, and running EMU at 192Khz using CRC and dithered output, I find EMU is among the smoothest source you can find under $1000. 192Khz is pretty amazing IMO to make the music more analog-sounding without giving up the PRAT and presence.
