Simple CD ROM question.

Since I usually just rip my cd's and never listen to them on my CD ROM, I never gave this much thought. But I was looking around in my machine and noticed on the back of the CD ROM there's an output for Digital and an output for Analog. I always felt if the main cable was hooked up it shouldn't matter, since all the bits should be getting copied to the HD. But does not having the analog or digital outs in use make a difference on the final quality of the rips?
