Rewritable CDs are not as reflective as CDRs and manufactured CDs. If a factory pressed CD is 10 on a scale of 1 to 10 in terms of reflectivity, a CDR is somewhere around 7. A CDRW may be as low as a 4. While most modern players can easily read a CDR, there are some that still have trouble with a CDRW. This reduced reflectivity would probably also affect the disk's ability to tolerate scratches. That said, I often use CDRWs for temporary storage work. For example, they are handy to convert an iTunes download from the restricted format into a MP3 or Flac file. I wouldn't recommend them as a format for permanent storage or use in cars, etc.
