Playing APE files in Mandriva 2007 Linux -- can it be done?

Greetings all,
A few days ago I installed the Mandriva 2007 distro and am now looking for a way to play my APE files. Some recommend XMMS with a plugin from the link below. I installed the plugin as instructed (dropping it into ~/.xmms/Plugins/), but XMMS still doesn't recognize APE files, so I guess it's an issue with Mandriva.
Anyway, if anyone has succeeded playing back APE files in Mandriva using any media player, I'd appreciate hearing how it's done.
