I modified my similar X-Meridian - sounds great too!

I agree that a little modifications to these similarly implemented sound cards results in phenomenal sound. I changed the op amps to LM4562 and DC coupled the outputs, so the dac balanced outs go directly to one op amp stage for filtering and balanced to unbalanced conversion.

Compared to my much modified Marantz CD63, my modified X-Meridian has far more detail but slightly lacks dynamics. My card is cursed with high-ESR surface mount electrolytics and there is not much space to fit larger capacitors. Your card and the others based on the CMI8788 and AK4396 use through-hole electrolytics and may have more modification potential. Your results with not using the op amps at all suggest that the DAC chip is less affected by power supply impedance than the op amps.

If anyone looking at my photo can identify the Make/model/specs. of the surface mount electrolytic capacitors, please reply.
