Turn off all of the hyperbole settings.Modern CD's are mastered with over the top levels. If you also have the "Sound Enhancer" and "Sound Check" settings turned to on, this will just aggravate the situation.
ITunes>Edit>Preference>Itunes>Playback>(Sound check/Sound Enhancer)
Some modern CD's simply ARE distorted. They are being manufactured with levels seeking +10dB and have no place to go so audible clipping and flat line amplitude while time is progressing is the result.
