I have to say my personal experience with the Lavry connected to a Macbook differs from yours - I am using a quality glass tosslink by Sonicwave as well and still did notice a difference between the Apple vs. my Audio Aero CDP as transport.

While both are very detailed, but the SPDIF output of the Audio Aero has a touch more decay and texture to the notes. Also, microdynamic changes and PRAT are more captured by the CDP as source.

Any ideas why the Optical out might not be quite as good? I do use Apple Lossless files played via itunes (ripped either via itunes or via Plextools on a Plextor drive).
