Re: Apple TV, etc.

The Apple TV is basically an anemic Mac Mini=

* No FireWire ports for DV Video cameras, multiple web cams & no connection for pro audio devices ... no connectors for the better external FW connected hard drives and DVD players & burners = :>(

* HDMI port instead of DVI port and RCA video connections (generally useless except for old tube TVs) Best resolution is 1080i = "last years best is this years junk". Everywhere at CES show this week the big deal is 1080p = if it ain't 1080p, its old technology. ( http://cesweb.org )

* Two analog RCA audio ports = indicates poor internal DAC (16 bit only? ... What about multi channel 5.1 ?)

* The good = "standard" SPDIF / Apple LossLess digital optical port (but all Macs have this feature now with that cute (but unreliable) combo optical / analog connection.

* The good = the Front Row controller and software scenario is very slick and very simple to use ... vastly superior to any Microsoft based scenario ... but all that is available on any regular Mac computer too.

... this gadget is hardly more than an accessory for a Mac multimedia network.

IMOP = if you want something with all of these capabilities and full computer virality as well, get a Mac Mini for US$600 = better connectivity to legacy video plus FireWire ports for real audio and video work. Gotta have HDMI? ... just add this: http://industrialcomponent.com/hdavlink/hdvifm.html

....

Apple will become a dominant player in computer audio (all Mac computers now have SPDIF optical audio ports), home theater (all Macs play DVD videos & DVD-A discs), pro audio (studio engineers prefer FireWire I/O for mastering), mostly based on ultra simple remote / GUI interface, increasing iPod related audio quality ... the only things missing from the Apple mix is multi-channel 24bit/192k input and output (available from third parties) and decent quality audio accessories for the iPod.

Apple stock took a US$10+ per share jump up in less than 48 hours = US$85 per to over US$97 per = The result of Apple (MacWorld) announcements of new products ... expect the stock to fall back to just under US$90 in the next few weeks, then progress to US$120 by end of summer or more by next Christmas ... and split after next MacWorld show.

Happy New Year
