The implementation of the DAC chip (power supply, board layout, clocking circuit, analog stage) all have far more to do with the final sound than the chip model.I've done the experiments where I built a platform that kept everything constant and just changed the bare minimum required to run different DAC chips and there was definately differences between them, but these changes were far smaller than even small changes in the analog output stage, how the power supply was implemented etc.
