In playback using ASIO S/PDIF, my USB device and X-Fi do not sound the same. The X-Fi is worse: it does not have the clear spatial separation and immediate in-room vocal clarity and lightning higher frequencies that go *snap* that the USB device has.

My guess is, the USB device has benefits due to being external from the PC and running off a different power supply.

However, I wouldn't say the X-Fi sounds more digital, or more fatiguing at all. The sound is more closed in, smeared, and relaxed. Kind of like a small portable music player. It's easy to tell which sound is technically superior, but there could be some who go either way in prefering one over the other.
