Firmware for TAS1020

The problem with the TAS1020 and USB3200 is that you have to write firmware for them in order to use the chips. As is from the factory they are useless without firmware. Everybody using these chips has had to write firmware for them. Steve at Empirical gets around this by buying the Maudio boards and their firmware, otherwise he would have to write his own firmware.

Writing firmware for the 1020 is not an easy task. It takes a special expensive compiler, the sample code from TI is full of errors, the documentation leaves out some critical things, support from TI is very difficult to get, especially for a DIYer! If you are part of a big company it might be easier.

I tried for several months to do it and finally gave up in disgust. Gordon stuck with it and was able to get some firmware written for it.
Its not what I would call "off the shelf".

Other options such as using generic procesors with USB support chunks are also possible, but again you have to write firmware for the processor. Some of the companies that sell these have library routines that make it not too bad, but still its not off the shelf.
