You are correct in assuming that the headphone output of the laptop does not have enough voltage to properly drive the line level input of the receiver. I have the same problem with my laptop.Your options are to buy a an external sound-card of some sort or an external DAC. I don't have any experience with the DAC you mentioned in your other post. My other people can offer some low priced alternatives.
