I have not used Windows Media Player to rip so I can't answer your question.

There is no error correction in reading CDs. Therefore, most folks prefer a "secure" rip. That is a rip where the data is read twice or a CRC check is used to validate the read. That said with CDs in good condition and a modern CD drive, one read is going to return the same results. Some of us are just paranoid... We also want to ensure a quality rip if the CD does not "read perfectly".

To get a secure rip, some folks use EAC. JRiver Media Center now does a secure rip and comparisons by others suggest the results compared to EAC are identical. Now EAC and JRiver do multiple reads. So it is slower. If you have a Plextor drive and use Plextools then it is able to do a secure rip without reading twice. It takes about 3 minutes to rip a CD using PlexTools. EAC used to take about 15 mins. That is why I switched to PlexTools!
