Ken, I would suggest this approach.
1. Decide what kind of enclosure you will use, it will determine the size of the motherboard you may use.So far, the best enclosure I have found is Antec NSK2400 - excellent
ventilation, elegant and cost less than $100. The only problem - there is place for only 2 hard drives. You may like some micro case, or small desktop case or something else. The two things to think about are heat - how it is dissipated and the noise, some small enclosures are noisy like vacuum cleaners.2. Once you know mobo format (micro, mini, full size) decide on processor you will be using. Intel or AMD X2
I guess that today Intel Core2 is the way to go.
3. Now, when you know the board format and processor, you have to find the manufacturer and model.Stick to the best known brands - ASUS, ABIT, MSI, GIGABYTE.
Still difficult, but your choice has been narrowed down
Next, decide about the features you will need.Integrated audio needed? Integrated video needed? Wireless support?
Restrict search to 2 models and finally search for the best price.
