Ubuntu is very popular, as is Knoppix. Both can be run entirely from CD, albeit slowly, or easily installed on a hard drive. Mandriva may be worth a look, as well.The free version of Redhat is called Fedora Core, and there is loads of free support for it all over the net.
Debian is also a very popular distribution, but requires more knowledge of linux to get going properly
I use Gentoo, which is one step away from Linux-from-scratch, or, building your own linux distribution. It's completely optimized for your PC, however, and can be blindingly fast compared to other distributions, on the same hardware.
The mini distros are usually based on the 2.4 or 2.2 kernel tree, which work much better on older hardware, but don't support newer hardware configurations.
