Don't go for the RME internal soundcard. I had one for several years and switched to the Apogee Mini-DAC with USB input. The improvement was huge. I highly recommend the Apogee; maybe you can find one used for $700 or so. I'm now using the Benchmark DAC1, but I miss the direct USB connectivity. As for monitors, I previously owned the LSR6325Ps. Not bad: excllent build quality (heavy as hell!), and they really crank if you want them to. The major drawback is that high-end clarity is a bit lacking. I now have the Genelec 8020s, which are really nice for such a small monitor.
The detail on this tiny system is incredible.
