Diiferences in USB cables?

Do any of the major cable manufacturers offer a USB cable? If so, is there much of an improvement over the generic USB cables when it comes to using them with a DAC?
The reason I ask is because I use a generic USB cable to connect my cheap Stereolink DAC to my Mac Mini. The generic cable is way too long, maybe 1-2 meters if I had to guess, and I end up either coiling up the excess or running it next to power cords which I know is bad on both counts. I really need about a .5m cable that is good quality, but is still reasonably priced (<$75).
If the "premium" cables dont make much difference, does anyone know where I can find a generic USB cable that is less than 1m long?
