mac mini optical out with Denon AVR3805 HT

Anybody using a mac mini with the optical out on a HT receiver like the Denon AVR3805 or others that have optical in for DAC processing. I use this setup with apple lossless as a music server with great results. I have read here though that everyone uses external DAC units and some claim they hear quality losses with apple lossless. I have done A/B comparisons and don't hear a difference however any lossy format I have tried does come up short to my ears. Is the DAC in my Denon as good as Denon claims? Is Apple Lossless really transparent? Any feedback or experiences with a setup like this appreciated. (BTW-Speakers are JBL L65 Jubals and amps are Heathkit W5M's using the pre outs on the Denon.
