funky USB to SPDIF converter to DAC problems - whats happening?

trying to run USB/SPDIF converter with various DACs - sometimes sound is a bit "funny". When I ran TrueRTA's sine generator, Sigtone and ART DIO sound on HF sine beat badly like fast high-pitched alarm clock yet these tones played reasonably clear with DAC-AH. DAC-AH (stock) has the muddiest bass sound on the little computer setup speakers.

whats happening? what might be fixes if any?
