The better your dac, the better the sound of these compressed lossy signals. I listen to NPR on a very good tuner, and when it's interviews the quality is pretty head to head to the VRS computer playing streams on Windows Media Player. When music starts however, you can pretty quickly pick out the internet stream, as it takes on the typical low-bit MP3 sound. But this shouldn't stop you from discovering the treasure trove of music available online.
Some stations sound much better than others though, and we have impressed a number of customers with the sound of music played from the Magnatune site.
I use the Squeezebox to stream internet radio to my greenhouse sometimes when I want to catch something while I am in there.
