It's nice to see that someone else is not afraid to say so. The best sounding compressed file is the one that has never been compressed in the first place (manipulated?). I don't have an Ipod or the need to compress my music, but I have messed around with the apple lossless format and I easily prefer the AIFF format. To go out on a further limb, I also prefer spinning a CD in real time and listening to the music as it plays. I have not found that a computer drive and USB dac sound better than my CD transport and S/Pdif DAC.
Still, I try to keep my mind open and I hope to keep learning.
