I thought I posted this earlier today but apparently not so here we go one more time.
I have an MP-1/M60 combo that has lost the magic lately. That OTL purity seems to be overlaid with a bit of glare or edginess and I'm trying to decide if it's a dirty AC problem or a matter of tube deterioration. I know Ralph recommends annual tube changes in his preamps but I only put about 5 hours a week average on my system so this seems excessive in my case. MP-1 tubes are about 2.5 yers old and are all NOS Sylvanis, Tungsol, etc. I don't have enough spares to change everything out wholesale in one fell swoop so my question is which tubes in the MP-1 are most critical to purity and musical rightness? Also, it is my understanding that one pair of tubes can be dispensed with entirely if the tape input(s) are left unused (as is the case with me). True and if so, which pair? TIA.
