Re: Differences in (2) MP3 Preamp

Is it possible that your MP-3 is or was a 235V unit? The toroid is an isolation transformer, used to supplement the electrostatic shields in the on-board transformers. They are generally used only on 235V units, as the on-board shields were found to be less effective at 235V.

Also, about the missing phono load strip. We had been getting occasional complaints of RF pickup in the MP-3, and this was traced to the phono loading strip. For a period, the feature was simply deleted until we could engineer a solid 'fix' for the RF problem. The fix arrived in the form of some small ferrite bead-on-lead parts, and a series of low-value grid stop resistors in the phono stage.

If one of these 'stripless' MP-3 shows up for service or update, we just go ahead and install the updated phono loading arrangement. I don't believe we charge for this work, but it would be worthwhile to call the factory and speak with Ralph, if you are wishing to have it done.
