Differences in (2) MP3 Preamp

Hi,
A friend bought a used MP-3 from an Audiogon private seller, and when comparing his to mine we noticed a couple of differences. Firstly, mine has what looks like a torodial transformer mounted to the rear panel just above the IEC jack, and his doesn't - what is it? Also, his is equipped with a phono section (as is mine) but he's missing the terminal strip for cartridge loading, although the holes for it are there. Any ideas?
PS finally did the proper mod (Zeners & resistors) to run the 12SL7s in V3 of my MA-1s. The sound is great, plus that's two less 12SX7 to worry about. Thanks for the help!
