Re: Joule Electra Mark...

The difference between the different versiona are mostly due to power supply design improvements. The latest versions of the OTLs are quieter (noise level appearing at the speaker) than the earlier versions. If you have fairly efficinet speakers (90dB plus) and a fairly quiet noise floor in your listening room, the newer versions (MKIV and MKV) are your best bets.

Variac and other transformer noise has been pretty quiet on all Joule amps I have seen in the past several years.... now the Variac will buzz a bit under load when the amps are being turned on, but once up to thier normal operating point (voltage), they are quite quiet.

I have seen, heard, and used both chassis styles of the Joule amps. The Music Wood enclosure on top of looking very slick, is made in such a manner (wood choice and jointery) that does make it different sounding than the standard enclosures (which sound a bit thicker and less pure than the Musicwood box). The Musicwood enclosures appear to bring the best performance out of the amps.... they sound a more linear, dynamic and tonally right than the standard enclosure.
