Why not use more EL509s? You need not design/develop/market a 100 ohm speaker. And who said that you need Class A? Why not Class A at low levels and slip into AB1 at high levels? Why not drive both the screen and control grid and get higher efficiency? What's wrong with an idle current of 250mA? It's peanuts. It's not doing any harm except perhaps to the environment. It heats the house too.
I use 8 EL509s and get 100W+ into 4 ohms with low distortion. It's true that things get a bit hot if that level is maintained for sometime (minutes) but then that is not real world usage.
Have faith and think big (and not big ohms!) :)
