Re: The Beast is here....

Brian, I have a question. What OTL amplifier runs in Class A all the way to full power? Remember, in Class A the current goes down in one output tube bank the same amount as it goes up in the other bank. In other words, just looking at one tube per bank for the moment, If the tube is biased at 70ma. idle current, 90 degrees into the drive signal, tube one is driven up to 140ma. and tube two is driven down to zero, unless the tube is non-linear. If the tube is non-linear then there is no sense talking about Class A. Look at all the books describing Class A circuits. It's all about linear operation. Operating the tube only in the MOST linear part of the curve, etc....

If the tubes were linear, biased at 70ma. that would be 70 times 8 or 560ma. of idle current in each bank for a circlotron using 8 6as7g's.
Bank one would go up to 1.12 amps and bank two would go down to zero. That would be 1.12 amps peak across an 8 ohm speaker. 8.96 volts peak across an 8ohm speaker is about 10watts peak. 5watts RMS.

Just because the 6as7g almost refuses to cutoff does not make an amplifier using them Class A until they do cutoff. It's only Class A up to the point where they get non-linear. Or the other way to say that; It's only Class A to the point that a linear tube would cutoff.
