I can second Legendre's comment about Heater Cathode troubles. I have, sitting next to me as we speak, between 30 and 40 of them which all show some degree or other of heater cathode leakage brand new fresh out of the box.
That said, the few that did not exhibit this have held their sound, even after burning in.
