Hi C.Y, looks like a great experiment!The 5K resistor is effectively in parallel with the load, right? So it evens out impedance variation from your speakers. Another few options to try:
Plate choke parallelled with 5K resistor (5K acts as load but required B+ voltage is much lower)
Series-feed 5K transformer with 5K parallelled resistor on the primary (series-fed equivalent)
Plate choke, 8R resistor across secondary (in parallel with speaker)Of course your circuit doesn't require a plate choke but these might be interesting experiments to try. In each case the effect of the resistor is to halve (?) the impedance variation seen by the amplifying device and (as you've found) should result in reduced distortion.
