I have ran horns directly off of the head phone jack of CD players before. You lose some punch and dampening due to the higher output impedance of the CD player, but it can still get loud enough to run you out of the room. Think about it, 2.83Vrms is 1 watt into an 8 ohm load, and 4Vrms is 1 watt into a 16 ohm load. If your CD player or tuner can put out 4V then you should be hitting +100dB with your horns. I would not say that that this method sounds better than a properly designed power amp (it doesn't IME), its just something I have done for demo purposes for those that have a hard time believe how efficient horns can be. If you used a step down transformer to better match the impedance of the CD or tuner, then you would likely not have enough voltage to drive to loud enough volumes. No free lunches.Rgs, JLH
