Thanks for the suggestions.It's a 48-liter box, but I've got low-pile carpeting lining the box. The intent is to get the volume to 45 liters, but I'm not sure how to measure the volume of the carpeting. I haven't sat down with the SPL meter and frequency sweeps, but I'd guess the current ports are rolling off around 55 hz or so. The bass response is smooth but laid back.
I'm wary of equalizer circuits, mostly because I'm an electrical idiot. The diagrams are meaningless to me. I don't have a sense of the variables either, so if the first whack doesn't achieve bliss, where to go from there? Martin King's MLTL is interesting but that means abandoning these boxes, which are really promising.
Maybe it's time for a crash course in circuitry and just roll up the sleeves.
