Re: Fostex fe166esr In BK-16

I have no frame of reference for comparing different BLH/drivers, etc., but I have been running the fe166es-r in the Fostex-recommended blh cabinets for a couple of days now. Here are a few observations from one who is hearing a single driver/BLH setup for the first time:

1. I actually have a bigger sweet spot now than with my previous setup (ProAc Response 1.5s moved well out from the back wall).

2. Much "smoother" (and "clearer", acc. to my wife!) presentation overall.

3. Soundstage width is improved. Not as deep, but that always seemed a little artificial to me anyway.

4. There are some lower midrange colorations at a certain frequency. I'll experiment with different damping materials and amounts in the compression chamber.

5. Then, of course, there is the bass question. I had the ProAcs dialed in to get clean, fulsome bass in the low 30s. I'm getting low frequency "impact" with the BLHs...but they certainly don't go that low. Although this only manifests itself on certain recordings...generally, the bass is quite satisfying, especially on acoustic string bass, which sounds more "real" than I've ever heard it.

6. To all of you drumkit afficianados out there: these speakers are not only dynamic and "punchy", but there is--once and for all--a seamless transition from cymbals to snare to toms to kickdrum that is quite amazing.

These speakers aren't perfect, but I'm hearing a different dimension to music...gee, maybe I'm finally hearing the music itself. Anyhow, the cabinets were fun to build, and it'll be fun tweaking and playing around with them.
