The all compression driver/horn approach has some advantages, but it has some disadvantges too. It's a frightfully expensive way to achieve our goal, and as you say, not something which can be easily accommodated in Tokyo. I changed companies just so I could get an apartment that I could fit a system like this into! :-)
It was a trip when the system was running. There were two 3-way tube electronic crossovers feeding 10 mono tube amplifiers to drive it. Most of my friends aren't into audio and consequently thought I had fallen off the deep end. (I'm pretty sure they're right.)
Now that the romance has worn off, I am looking forward to setting up a more modest system which serves music better; probably with horns above 1 kHz and direct radiators below, and a passive crossover to keep tube costs and amplifier maintainance down.
BTW, where are you in Tokyo? I'm in Gokokuji, between Iidabashi and Ikebukuro. Let me know if you're ever in the neighborhood.
