Hi Rich,

Good question.

Steve Harris in his HFN&RR Review stated it thus;
"With its very high published sensitivity, the Avantgarde is eminently sutable for small valve amplifiers; 10 watts single-ended-triode amplifiers will easily go loud enough. Paradoxically, the better subwoofer actually makes the UNO more demanding on amp quality. The sub has its own amplification and so makes no real power demands. However, the subwoofers amplifier cannot make something out of nothing: if the bass quality of the chosen external amplifier is poor, you will certainly hear it. With some valve amplifiers, in other words, the subwoofers qualities will be wasted."

In this case, it may not be bass quality so much as absolute extension. Given the very high impedence of the DUO sub's input, virtually no current is required to drive the bass. So while amp A may make useful bass power (in terms of driving an 8 ohm speaker) down to 30 Hz then roll off (sensible when you've only got a few watts in the first place), amp B may produce 8 Hz bass with insufficient power to drive an 8ohm woofer but quite enough for the Sub's high impedence input.
