Re: Straight 8s compared to "store bought" speakers

It's been quite a while since I heard the Shearwaters. In some respects, I'd consider the move to Straight 8s to be sideways; however, the most obvious difference is that the 8s are 8 db more efficient. Where the Shearwaters really need 30 watts or so to sing, the 8s can do it easily with 10. But the Shearwaters also go a bit lower than the 8s though not by a great margin. Either choice would require a sub to do the last octave.

As to imaging, both speakers imagine extremely well. I'm a wanderer, I rarely just sit and listen. I don't find this to be a problem with the 8s at all. However, yes, moving a few feet one way or the other at the listening position will cause the center image to apparently shift a bit when the speakers are set up pointing strait ahead. For quite a while, I had the 8s set up with extreme toe in, like 45 degrees. With that set up, the image is quite stable in nearly any position and depth increases at the expense of some ss width.

Tone, timber and dynamics are excellent including microdynamics. At very loud levels, 105db+, the 300B will start to give up and you will start getting a little SET compression of dynamics. At lower levels, the 8s still sound quite good though at the wife's background, real low level, 60-70db, I feel that they do lose a bit of the warmth. My Vandies were better there, but I also wouldn't say that the 8s need to be loud to sound good as some speakers do.

I have also heard the Oris briefly at VSAC. It may have been a smaller horn than the 150 with an AER driver, I'm not sure. It's a more forward sound and it seemed somewhat leaner to my ears. Being show conditions, it's difficult to draw any real conclusions, but I do think you'd find the 8s to be more laid back, warmer and more similar to the Shearwaters albeit with greater efficiency and dynamics with low power amps.
