on loan from a local... umm... resource.
I had a pair of 416s (with Valencias wrapped around 'em) for quite a while, but passed them along to a hifi colleague before we moved from MA to NH. I would've felt guilty gutting the Valencias, even if I had known that I might, eventually, move away from the Duplexes, though!
So -- I really really really like(d) the sound of the Duplexes (604Es, in my case, with MasteringLabs XOs); the only issue - for me - was the narrow-ness of the "sweet spot" when I got them up here to the NH house and its 'listening room' (junk room -- let's be honest ;) ). I started fiddling around and one thing led to another... and now I have to figure out how to purchase these 515Bs (or another pair in the condition they're in) and still have both of my own kidneys on board & functioning ;)
My logic (such as it was/is) -- the woofer section of the Duplexes is kinda, sorta akin to the 515B (as I understand it), so... a 515B oughta work OK in a cabinet designed for a Duplex. Right? Of course, I can't reconcile that with the fact that no one in his/her/their right minds uses a 515B in a simple (vented) bass reflex enclosure. Ahh, the joys of Altec-dom.
Along the same lines, the treble section of the Duplexes is reputed to be kinda, sorta akin to the 802(B?) -- I will say that the "actual" 802B sounds pretty darned good on an EMILAR EH500-2 (with throat adaptor) -- but so do the JBL 2441s I ended up using, and the coolness factor of the 2441 is undeniable. ;)
all the best,
mrh
